‘리빗 한남’은 ‘더 트리니티 갤러리’와 함께 3월 8일부터 5월 21일까지 손수민 작가의 <RÊVEATHARSIS>展을 개최합니다.
이번 전시명인 <RÊVEATHARSIS>은 새롭게 탄생한 단어로, ‘RÊVEAT’ + ‘CATHARSIS’의 합성어입니다.
캐주얼 하면서도 세련된 프렌치 다이닝을 지향하는 리빗 한남의 <RÊVEAT>은 ‘RÊVE(꿈)’, ‘EAT(먹다)’가 결합해
‘특별한 음식을 먹고 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 경험을 하자’라는 의미를 갖고 있습니다.
<CATHARSIS>는 손수민 작가가 최근 발표한 작품 연작으로,
고통을 극복한 인간의 완고한 성숙을 <CATHARSIS>(정화)를 통해 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 담고 있습니다.
스스로 꿈을 꾸고 있다는 사실을 자각하여 원하는 행동을 할 수 있는 ‘루시드 드림(Lucid Dream)’처럼,
작품과 함께 정서적 카타르시스가 실현되는 꿈의 공간 리빗 한남의 <RÊVEATHARSIS>展에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

Along with ‘The Trinity Gallery’, ‘Reveat Hannam’, will hold an exhibition titled <RÊVEATHARSIS> by Son Sumin from March 8 to May 21.
The title of this exhibition, <RÊVEATHARSIS>, is a newly created portmanteau of the words ‘RÊVEAT’ + ‘CATHARSIS’.
Reveat Hannam's <RÊVEAT>, which delivers casual yet sophisticated French dining, combines the words 'Rêve' and 'Eat', which means
'Let's eat special cuisine and have a dream-like experience'.
<CATHARSIS> is a series of works recently released by artist Son Sumin, and contains the message to convey the unyielding maturity of human beings to overcome pain through <CATHARSIS>. Welcome to the <RÊVEATHARSIS> exhibition hosted by Reveat Hannam, constituting a dream space where emotional catharsis is realized with artwork akin to a 'lucid dream', where you can act freely through an awareness of your dream state.

정화(淨化) : 무언가를 잃어버린, 혹은 상실한 세상 모든 이에게 전하는 메시지

손수민 작가의 <Catharsis>(정화) 연작은 엄격한 수동 프로세스를 통해 완성된다. 부조화된 이미지에 깨알 같은 텍스트를 배경으로 하는 그것은 추상과 구상 사이의 대립을 뒤섞어 상호 의존성을 드러낸다. 특히 특정한 모양을 식각하는 패터닝(patterning)은 그의 스타일을 규정하는 시그니처(signature) 요소로 아쉬움이 없다. 이미지는 가독성 높은 원색과 부수적인 세부 사항이 제거된 대비(대립이 아닌)를 내보인다. 붉거나 푸른 입체 인장과 그 내부에 새겨진 ‘LOVE’, ‘HOPE’, ‘STAR’, ‘HEART’, ‘TIME’ 등의 단어는 명료한 의미전달을 위한 장치다. 익숙한 낱말을 통해 작화의 의도를 보다 명징하게 고지하고 많은 사람들이 공감할 수 있도록 한 셈이다. 흡사 인쇄처럼 매끈하게 각인된 텍스트와 그래픽 코드의 강조가 두드러짐 역시 위와 같은 조형방식의 결과다. 근작의 메시지는 ‘소통’에 있다. 인생을 현명하게 살아가는 데 도움을 주는 가르침 혹은 교훈적인 텍스트 또한 동일한 맥락에 놓인다. 마음의 진실하고 참됨이 너무나 쉽고 가볍게 희석되는 현실에서 동시대를 살아가는 모든 이들에게 따뜻하고 희망적인 글을 통해 용기를 북돋으며, 존재적 가치가 담긴 메시지로 삶의 본질에 대해 질문-산포(散布)하고자 하는 게 이번 작업의 목적이다. 발화자의 정서적 공감의 유대도 빼놓을 수 없다. 실제로 작가는 작품을 접하는 이들에게 ‘작음 울림’이 되길 기대한다. “우리의 인생은 너무나 바쁘고 빠른 나날의 연속이라 주변을 둘러보지 못하는 경우가 많아질 뿐더러, 편리해진 기계화로 교감과 소통을 대신하는 시대를 살아가고 있다.”며 “읽었던 글들 중에 좋은 글들을 많은 사람들과 공유하고 싶다는 생각이 작업의 시발점이 되었다.”고 했다. 그의 작업에 등장하는 글들은 헤르만 헤세의 명언을 비롯해 오드리 햅번, 수잔 케인, 피카소 등 다양하다. 이 글들을 선택했다는 것은 작가의 사상과 관련되며, 자아를 포함한 현실과 사회 등의 세상사에 관한 자신의 앎이 시각적 관심으로 확장되는 것과 무관하지 않다. 물론 전시 주제인 정화(淨化), 무언가를 잃어버리거나 혹은 상실한 세상 모든 이에게 전하는 메시지는 중요한 밑동이다. 무엇보다 텍스트의 내용만으로도 충분히 아름답다고 할 만하다. 하나같이 인간 삶에 있어 요구되는 지침이나 깨달음, 본질과도 연결되는 것들이다. 이를 바탕으로 할 때 흥미로운 사실은 손수민의 작품의 경우 그 출발로서 ‘나’의 내면과 본질의 종횡과 관계 맺는다는 점이다. 이는 존재를 외면에서 하나의 구조체로의 전개로 드러내며 부각되는데, 이 본질의 외화는 군더더기 없는 정화의 형태를 현현하고, 실제 우리가 눈으로 마주할 수 있는 <Catharsis> 시리즈로 귀결된다.

Catharsis: A message for everyone who has lost something or dealing with a meaningless world.

Artist Son Sumin's <Catharsis> series is completed through a strict manual process. Using the backdrop of grainy texts on incongruent images, his work incorporates the confrontation between abstraction and composition, revealing interdependency. Notably, the patterning, characterized by etching a particular shape, is a signature element that defines his unique style unabashedly. The images reveal a contrast (not confrontation) with legible primary colors without incidental details added. The red or blue three-dimensional seals and words, such as ‘Love’, ‘Hope’, ‘Star’, ‘Heart’, and ‘Time’, engraved inside are devices for clear meaning delivery. Through familiar words, the intention of the work is more clearly pronounced, so that many people can relate to it. The texts that are smoothly imprinted as if printed and the emphasis on graphic codes are also a result of the above method.
The message of his recent work lies in ‘communication’. The teaching or didactic texts that help in how to live your life wisely are also used in the same context. In a reality where the truth and sincerity of heart is so easily and carelessly diluted, the purpose of this work is to encourage everyone who lives in contemporary times through warm and inspiring writings, and to raise questions about and spread the essence of life with a message of existential value. The cohesion of emotional empathy of individual voices cannot be omitted. Indeed, the artist hopes the work to be a ‘small ripple’ to those who come into contact with it.
He stated, “Our lives are so busy and fast-paced that there are often times when we cannot see the forest from the trees, and we are living in an era where sympathy and communication are replaced by convenient mechanization,” and explained, “The idea of sharing good writings with many people among those I have read served as the starting point of this work.”
The diverse writings that appear in his work include famous quotes by Hermann Hesse, Audrey Hepburn, Susan Kane, and Picasso. The selection of these writings is related to the writer's thoughts, and is unrelated to one's own knowledge on world affairs, such as reality and society including the ego, and the expansion into visual interest. Indeed, the theme of the exhibition, catharsis, and the message to everyone in the world who has known a sense of loss are all important foundations. All the while, it is worth noting that the content of the text alone is beautiful enough, having a relation to the guidelines, enlightenment, and essence required in human life.
Given this fact, it is all the more interesting that the starting point of Son Sumin's work is related to the intertwining of the inner side and essence of 'I'. This is highlighted by revealing the existence as a development of a single structure from the outside. This externalization of essence manifests the form of catharsis without embellishment, and results in the <Catharsis> series that we can meet with our eyes up-front.
